2021.10.22 09:00 the-third-person The Society of Apocryphal Gentlefolk: The Black Fog, Part VI
This is part of an ongoing serial. You can start at the beginning here.
“I’m just saying, I don’t know why I’m surprised.” Cob turned his sneer on Scottie. “Must be a lot easier than doing real farm work.”
“We’ve got a better farm than you’ll ever run,” Scottie said, stepping toward Cob threateningly.
Cob laughed. “What, you’re gonna deck me now that my hands are cuffed? Go for it, big man.”
Scottie stared at him for a second, hatred in his eyes. “You’re lucky Lawrence pulled you out of that smoke. You’re lucky we let you in here at all.”
“Quit wasting your breath on him and come seal up this door!” Lawrence snapped. The plastic sheeting in front of him was darkened by the encroaching fog. It bulged inward slightly as the malevolent cloud sought entry. Small feelers squirmed in over the top of the door where Lawrence had not yet applied the tape.
Scottie shouldered his way past Cob and slapped a strip of duct tape across the top of the door. His eyes went wide as the fog drifted over his hands, dissipating as it was cut off from the main source.
“How is that so cold? It numbed my fingers just by touching them!”
“It’s not even cold, exactly,” said Lawrence. “When I was trying to pull Jordan out, it got my arms that same way. It was like they just—forgot how to move.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” agreed Scottie, rubbing his hands together briskly. “They don’t feel cold. They’re just…off.”
“Cob, you were in it,” said Rosie. “Are you okay? What was it like?”
Like death, Cob thought. Like all of life and thought and self was a dream I was waking up from, knowing I was about to forget it. Like the fog was all there was anywhere, forever.
He shrugged, unwilling to admit to weakness. “I don’t know. Wasn’t so bad once I got out of it.”
“Once a McCoy pulled you out, you mean,” Scottie jeered.
“We all saw you whimpering over your fingers just now,” Cob shot back. “Don’t go claiming your brother’s accomplishments.”
Scottie was still trying to think of a retort when Mo asked, “How are we gonna get out of here?”
As one, the group looked at the front of the growhouse. The darkness had already covered the entire front wall and was spilling over the roof like a spreading inkstain. It rolled methodically along, the plastic walls flexing and rippling as it prodded for leaks or tears.
“I don’t think it’s big enough to cover the whole growhouse,” Scottie said uncertainly. “It was all tucked under the car before, after all. Maybe when it goes on toward the back, we can make a break for it.”
“Running! Yeah, great call,” said Cob sarcastically. “Maybe you can run all the way to town.”
“You got a better idea?”
“We could call for help, genius. With our phones.” Cob jingled the cuffs. “I’d do it, but I’m kinda stuck just now.”
Ears burning, Scottie took out his cellphone. NO SERVICE, read the screen. He shook it in annoyance.
“There’s usually service here. Course it doesn’t work now.”
Farther back in the growhouse, Rosie said, “Pa?”
The rest of the group turned to look. Rosie had her phone to her ear.
“Pa, we’re at the McCoy place! There’s somethi—hello?” She took the phone away to look at the screen. “It just cut out on me.”
“Go to the back!” Lawrence said urgently. He pointed upward to the roiling darkness, which was now covering half of the growhouse. “Get out from under it!”
“It can’t get in—” Mo began, but Cob cut him off.
“The phone signals, dummy! Go try from the part it hasn’t covered yet!”
Rosie took several quick steps. “He’s right! I’ve got bars again!”
She eyed the dark mass overhead and hurried toward the back wall, brushing past rows of leafy plants. “Pa! Something real bad’s going on. We’re trapped in a greenhouse at the McCoy place. No, pa, we—Pa! Listen! It’s not the McCoys. There’s something going on, a big cloud or something! I know it doesn’t make sense, but you gotta trust me!”
Lawrence, meanwhile, had joined her at the far end of the hut and was dialing 911. He cast anxious glances upward, eyeballing the diminishing open space as the phone rang.
Once. Twice. “C’mon, answer!” snarled Lawrence. The fog was rolling steadily closer.
Next to him, Rosie continued her argument. “No, don’t come over! And if you see a black cloud, seal yourself up!”
Three rings. Four. “Some emergency services!” The darkness was nearly to the back wall. The front of the growhouse was completely lost in shadow, as black as a moonless night. Scottie, Cob and Mo pressed toward the back, instinctively huddling toward the remaining light.
On the fifth ring, the call was answered. “Hello—”
Lawrence yelled rapidly into the phone. “McCoy farm! Send help! We’re—”
Three quick beeps indicated that that was all of the message he was going to be able to convey. Lawrence dropped the phone to his side in disgust. “Well.”
Rosie, too, was looking at her dropped call. Her face glowed in the light of the screen. Everything else in the growhouse was shrouded in darkness.
There was a long rustling sound, and then rows of full-spectrum lights blazed to life, running the length of the long tables. Scottie knelt by the front door with his hand on a power strip. The bright lights pushed back the oppressive darkness, but only as far as the walls. Outside, the fog continued to loom, testing the plastic over and over in its effort to get inside.
Lawrence ran a despondent look across the utter blackness wrapped fully around the hut. “Guess it can cover the whole thing, huh, Scottie?”
“Looks like,” Scottie agreed. “You think that call got through?”
“We’d better hope.”
“I think maybe I can make it through,” Mo volunteered.
“What? Don’t be stupid,” Cob said. He tried to sound dismissive, but his voice quavered as the thought of being inside that fog again invaded his mind. He swallowed painfully, feeling even more trapped by the handcuffs.
“I’m not stupid! I could do it,” Mo said defensively. “How thick can it be out there at this point? It’s mainly gotta be at the back right now. If someone else opens the door, I can get a good running start and just plow right through. It’s not that fast. I can make it to the truck.”
“Mo, no,” said Rosie.
Cob added, “That’s stupid and you’re not doing it.”
“I could,” Mo said sullenly.
“We don’t have to,” Rosie reassured him. “Let’s just sit tight and see if it goes away on its own.”
“Or if the sheriff gets here,” Lawrence said.
“What’s he gonna do against a cloud of death?” Cob asked. Again his tone betrayed him. He meant for the question to sound dismissive, but it came out pleading.
A heavy silence descended. Each member of the small group hoped one of the others would break it, but no one did. Instead, they were left staring awkwardly at the plants, each alone with their thoughts. The plastic sheeting rustled and hissed in a gentle pattern, swaying under the steady ministrations of the fog.
Lawrence sat down and leaned against one of the two-by-fours that made up the building frame, but quickly found that up close, the susurrus of the plastic began to sound like half-heard words. Although he could not quite make any sense of them, he could not shake the feeling that he would be able to if he was just a little bit closer—if he just let the fog inside.
When he noticed his hand slowly creeping toward the lower edge of the sheeting as if to pry it free from the board, Lawrence quickly shifted his position so that he was leaning against one of the table legs. The pseudovoices vanished, and with them the compulsion to hear them more clearly.
Scottie took up the roll of duct tape and began to prowl the edges of the enclosure, looking for gaps. Although the fog did not appear to be entering their space, he still taped a number of areas until they were sealed to his satisfaction.
Rosie, seeing what Scottie was doing, joined him in his search for vulnerabilities. He did not verbally acknowledge her help, but any time she stopped to peer at a section of the wall, Scottie tore off a length of tape and passed it to her without asking.
Cob fiddled with the handcuffs and looked around for anything that looked like it might be able to break a chain, or at least pick a lock. The growhouse was unfortunately devoid of anything that seemed likely to suit either purpose. He paced back and forth, trying to ignore the rising feeling of being caught in a trap.
Mo sat against the wall for a while, picking his teeth with his fingernails. He got up and paced for a bit. He flicked the leaves of one of the marijuana plants, muttering to himself under his breath. He walked a bit more, seemingly aimlessly.
When his path brought him near the hut’s door, Mo took a deep breath and yanked it open. The tape tore free with a tremendous sound. Outside of the door, the fog sat in a thick black wall. It held its shape for a moment as if surprised, then began to flood in.
As the others sprang up with shouts of alarm, Mo lowered his head and sprinted into the darkness.

2021.10.22 09:00 cavemankettlebells Reddit Kettlebell VS Dumbbell
Is a kettlebell better than a dumbbell? What is the outcome when you have a kettlebell versus a dumbbell?
This Reddit is for kettlebell training but that doesn't mean we put anything that is not a kettlebell down, so, let's start by saying that there is a time and place for a dumbbell, and a dumbbell is good in its own way. Certain people like a dumbbell better, so, for them, the dumbbell is the best tool and wins.
If we are going to look at this from the perspective of which one is more versatile, then the kettlebell wins by far.
If we are going to look at this from the perspective of which one is more superior, then we first have to know the goals before we can make a judgment. Without a doubt, the kettlebell will win in the majority of cases, even when it comes to strength or curling. Yes, the dumbbell wins when it comes to a lower curve for learning, it's less complex, and in most cases that is a superior attribute but that doesn't win it for the dumbbell overall.
In general, people will put the kettlebell down for strength or hypertrophy exercises/training, especially when it comes to curling with the kettlebell. So, I'm going to post a few things on that below.
Let me also come straight out and tell you that a kettlebell is actually a really great tool for curling, actually much better than the barbell or dumbbell. The kettlebells design provides a mechanical advantage when it comes to curling, that advantage is high mechanical tension. In laymen’s terms, when you get to the end of the upper part of the rep with a dumbbell, that weight is resting right above your forearm, which means the tension on the elbow flexors is no longer there. However, when you use a kettlebell, even at the top of that rep the tension remains. The kettlebell still wants to fall away from the body and the elbow flexors (biceps curl) need to prevent them from falling.

But you should ALWAYS be branding, so here we go:
Have you seen an apartment complex that isn’t getting love?
If the landlord or the operators of your building aren't fixing anything, trash is left, or even if the grass isn't getting cut or the windows aren't getting washed, it's poorly run.
Usually, that's because the landlord was undercapitalized and inexperienced; not because the landlord's a douchebag. If you let us know, we can try to run it so you can stop worrying about your place.
