2022.01.19 22:34 FishyRP [Lore] At the Palestone Sword Tower
The Palestone Sword Tower was the tallest tower in Starfall, it's roof peaking high, painted a deeper purple to set it apart. It's circular walls curved unnaturally, as though built with near impossible precision that no other wall of Starfall shared. The thing that set it apart most was that no Dayne, Lord or otherwise, was allowed into it. Only the Palestone guard, a group of forty of the most loyal and trustworthy knights, could stand vigil within. It was the tower that held Dawn, the fabled sword made from the heart of a fallen star. It's great winding staircase bore deep into the group, leading to an unseen labrynth that sat below the bed of the Torrentine so as to hide Dawn in times of war or siege. It's paths were only memorised by one man: The Master of the Palestone Tower.
Martyn gazed upon it as the gulls returned to nest, and spring finally arrived to thaw the ice atop the mountains and the Torrentine broadened and rose like before and beds of lavender grew wildly along it's banks, native to the hard gravel. He imagined himself walking upto the Tower's door and knocking aloud, to declare his intention. There could only be one intention. He remembered when Uncle Hedan kissed him on his forehead, and heroically unsheathed his sword and proclaimed to the court of Starfall that he was worthy. Lost in the desert, never to be found. Perhaps, that would be Martyn's destiny. But he had made peace with it. He would either be the famed Sword of the Morning or die trying.
He stood there, watching, avoiding his gaze from the steely Palestone guard who watched him curiously, wondering whether the boy had the guts. They watched him for hours, but they did not move or crack jokes, or speak to one another about this Dayne. Only their gaze could be felt burning his skin. They watched the sun rise, reach it's apex and fall. As was custom, that intention could only be declared at dusk.
He took one deep breath and walked upto it's steel doors and knocked thrice. The door creaked open for the man in charge to come forth. "What business do you have with the Palestone Sword?" he asked, his eyes a dark black with a grim leathery face, and a square beard. He was bald, but he was not short. "Well?"
"I...I've...—" Martyn fumbled, not being let to answer.
"We don't have all day, boy!" The man shouted, barking every syllable, his brows curling with spit escaping his mouth "Come on, lets hear it!"
"I-...I've come to claim Dawn!" He shouted, with his eyes resolute and his teeth clenched. He meant it, and there was no going back now.
"You are not worthy." The old man huffed and said, as he shut the door close, impossibly fast for it's weight.
He was taken aback, his heart sunk deep into his gullet. He sighed, and turned as the gravel cracked beneath him. There is no going back. He walked back and knocked thrice again. No answer, as the Sun sped it's fall and was halved by the Red Mountains. The sky grew a low orange, then a red, then deep blue. Still no answer. He sighed, as he prepared to knock one more time, then the sky grew a certain violet. Dusk, and he remembered. He unsheathed his sword, turning away from the guards who pointed their spears at him in response. He looked at the dying glimmer of the sun and shouted with all his might, "I have come to claim Dawn, as is my right!"
Freedom. He breathed heavily, clenching his jaw with every pull, whistling with the wind as the door creaked open and lanterns were being lit in preparation for the night. "If that is your wish, ser, then you should come inside."
They climbed the winding stairs to come to the tower's second floor, where a book was placed over a pedestal. Above it were two crossed swords, made of the same design but one was broken and it's pieces hung beside it, reflecting the light of the moon from the open window.
The man introduced himself, "You do not know me. I am the Master of the Palestone Sword. Ser Rickard Haswell." He shook Martyn's hand and opened the book where the mark was set. "This is a list of all previous claimants. Those who succeeded have a star drawn beside their name. We call them section marks...and they are rare."
The book was thick, but it was half filled. When Martyn looked around, there was an entire shelf filled with them. He asked "Those that failed?"
"...and those that died in the attempt?" He asked again, turning his eyes to the old, stocky man.
Rickard sighed, for he knew his uncle. He walked over to the crossed sword and pointed, "When a claimant succeeds, we forge a new sword for the display. This one is older than the conquest, when Ser Joffrey Dayne succeeded in his claim. When a claimant dies, a sword is forged and shattered. It's pieces cross beside it. We also mark fallen claimants with an 'x'. It's—"
"This one is not that old." He answered, as he turned to look at the sword that was made and broken for his uncle. They looked nothing like Dawn, for they were not Dawn. But they were definitely better than any sword he ever held. Ser Joffrey's sword still had mark of crimson by it's blade and streaks of ash, a testament to his siege of Oldtown. Every other inch of the blade seemed to have been cleaned regularly, but it's experience in battlefield was allowed to stay.
"They both shine just as much, ser." Rickard said, offering consolation for what happened. But they were not girls to be weeping in these chambers of glory, "You have claimed Dawn, ser. You will have to write your name and the day on which you claimed by Dornish Reckoning." He offered Martyn a quill, as he hunched and read the names.
"What's the date beside these, then?" He asked, turning his head at Rickard, who replied, "That is the era of your father. Older books are numbered by the year of the king of torrentine's reign of the time. We keep that tradition alive."
Martyn hummed, and returned to read the names. His uncle's name written once, Ser Hedan Dayne, marked with an 'x'. His grandfather's brother's, Ser Adrian Dayne, unmarked once and once with an 'x'. Lastly, his grandfather's uncle, Ser Joffrey Dayne, marked with a star. But oddly, there were two prior attempts which were unmarked. "Is it common for claimants to claim it multiple times and still succeed?"
The old man laughed and replied, "Practice makes perfect, ser. Ser Davos Dayne claimed Dawn eight times. He was whimsical at first, and his drive was his father; King Vorian's banishment to the Wall, when he forfeited Dawn. Ser Joffrey was truly skilled to succeed in three. Good luck, ser." Rickard patted Martyn on his shoulder, and took a step back.
"That he was..." Martyn muttered, as he breathed deeply, knowing that amongst the dead and the glorified, he would have to prove his mettle. He inked his quill and wrote.
Ser Martyn Dayne, 5th day, First Moon of 821 DR

Spring has come and the air is warming. By the time that trial occurs, the desert will return to it's heat, so I cannot leave suspicion in an attempt at cheating. I have written my name on the list of claimants in the Palestone Sword Tower and by tradition you must be here to witness me. Ser Rickard Haswell has already sent for the three elders and the septon.

2022.01.19 22:34 2hats4bats I only have one gripe..
For the last 30+ years, when I thought of Boba Fett, I pictured the helmet. Now when I think of Boba Fett, I picture Teamura Morrison’s face.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great face. I wish I had it. Fits Boba perfectly and I’m enjoying seeing the character develop. This isn’t a knock on the show at all because I think it’s important to see his face for the narrative.
But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a bit of sadness for that change.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this.
